FAQs about hotels in Angers

A Loire Valley City With a Difference

Sophisticated Angers sits by 3 rivers draining into the Loire, and the imposing walls and turrets of its 13th-century fortress are a complete contrast to the other Loire Valley castles. The former Plantaganet seat, the castle is surrounded by landscaped gardens and a smaller castle inside contains the medieval Apocalypse Tapestry.

More modern tapestries are in St John’s Hospital, one of the oldest in Europe, by St Aubin’s Tower which was once part of an abbey. Ronceray Abbey sits amid half-timbered buildings on a street which continues over Verdun Bridge to St Maurice Cathedral, whose twin spires tower over Angers. Pavement cafes on the square behind overlook Adam’s House.

The main square - Place du Ralliement – houses the Grand Theatre and restaurants and bars serving Anjou wine and locally distilled Cointreau. Shopping streets surround it and nearby are the Fine Art Museum and Logis Pincé classical museum.

The court building overlooks the elegant Jardin du Mail, while the Jardin des Plantes are the oldest botanical gardens in Angers. The Terra Botanica amusement park is on St Aubin Island, one of several within the rivers. St Nicholas Lake has been artificially created, as has Maine Lake where there is a watersports centre.

The Angers accommodation on Booking.com includes luxury city centre hotels and cheap apartments near the train station.

Angers city is easily accessible from Nantes by train.

Angers city is easily accessible from Nantes by train. (35Mins). Take a walk along the far side of the old bridge from the food hall and find the restaurants sited along the river bank, where most of the locals hang out. River boat trips can also be booked from this location. The Chateau museum is well worth a visit and provides a history and views of the city.

Although I stayed at this property for just a few nights, I was actually in Angers for two months, with stays in other apartments as well. I stayed in the center, within walking distance of numerous museums, historical sites, restaurants, shopping venues, grocery stores, public transportation, botanical garden, chateau, etc. Angers is a friendly and welcoming city with an interesting history and many medieval buildings. In general English is not as widely spoken as in Paris or other larger cities, but if one makes an effort it is fine for a person with basic French language skills. A relatively unique attraction for English speakers is the Anglophone library in Angers, which offers numerous opportunities to meet French people eager to practice their English! The public transportation and walkability are excellent; there is no need for a car there. It's also reachable via direct train from the Charles de Gaulle airport, with no need to go into Paris if one wishes to avoid that.

Angers lives up to its reputation as a "gentle" (douce) place to live or visit. Absolutely stress free living, with a warm welcome for visitors. An immaculate town: everything is clean, elegant and well-maintained and a lot of effort has gone into planting trees and flowers. The town is filled with the scent of flowers and the calls of swifts in June. Despite its beauty and the impeccable state of the old buildings, the medieval old town was mainly empty of tourists except around the impressive castle. This must be the last tourist destination that remains uncrowded. Its small size makes Angers ideal for walking, while for greater distances the reliable public transport system avoids the need for a car. The arboretum is worth visiting, but unfortunately its four internal gardens are closed on Wednesdays. It's located in a poorer area of Angers but everything was nevertheless immaculately clean and well-maintained, and we felt safe at all times. The botanic garden (Jardin des Plantes) is also very impressive. The plentiful offer of restaurants includes some on the riverside, such as the rooftop of the theatre overlooking the castle (La Réserve), accessible by lift, and on the other side of the river Carmine with seasonal delicate dishes. Other good restaurants include the Brasserie on the Place du Ralliement, the main square, open without interruption until midnight, and the Crêperie du Chateau for pancakes (reservation advised due to its small size).

As an ancient city it lacked any character, the cathedral was close, there was one ancient wooden framed building (we found) which had recently been OVER restored. The rest was bland, very French architecture but hardly inspiring. There is also quite a big height difference between the top of the city, Cathedral, part of the old abbey, railway station, down to the riverside and chateau area.

The various historic sites (castles, churches, museums, Le Doutre) are so engaging and interesting. Such a lovely setting on the river, it begged to be walked and explored. We would have gone further afield with more time, but for a quick weekend break, it was perfect.

Perfect quiet location, a 3 min walk to reach a tramway station (St Serge) that will get you pretty much everywhere from the Angers train station (7 min by tram) to university campus. A 10 min short walk to reach the city centre. A grocery sore (U express) is around the corner 2 min away. Apartment was clean, bed and pillows were very comfy, kitchen had everything I needed to cook, and I loved the coffee machine with free pods. Also, it was very easy to contact the host if any issue or question.
