Corfu is a naturally beautiful island. The scenery, beaches, hikes and local people are great. However, the number of tourists (including us) are a problem. Excess traffic (land and water), crowding and the resulting garbage would affect our ability to recommend a visit to others. There should be limitations placed on the number of visitors at any given time. Car and other vehicle rentals should be limited to locals. Visitors should take taxis or preferably buses only. My evaluation is strongly influenced by the period when we visited the island – August. Therefore, I do not recommend visiting the island in August, as it is extremely overcrowded. Also, the steep streets and narrow access alleys become even more difficult to navigate during this time of year, and you will need to fully rely on your driving skills, often pushing your car to its limits. We missed some of the island’s attractions because of these inconveniences. That being said, the island has many beautiful places to see and experience – beaches, breathtaking views, tavernas, welcoming people, and much more. I recommend visiting the island in September, ideally for 5–10 days, and exploring the most popular places early in the morning. We stayed for a week in Corfu town.
We stayed for a week in Corfu town. Great base for seeing the island. We took a trip to sarande , another trip to Paxos/anti paxos , hired a car and went to 2 beaches in the west of the island. The old town is fantastic but once the cruise ships come in it impossible to move around or see anything in peace. There are too many people allowed to visit. We hired a car so we could explore Corfu and go to different beaches as there are no beaches near the hotel. You can swim in the sea in-front of the hotel but there is no beach to sunbath on.
