I loved my stay here. It exceeded my expectations. The room itself was spacious and felt very new. There was even a jacuzzi tub that I completely did not expect. The breakfast was also a surprising hit. I loved the made-to-order pancakes and the DIY onigiri station. Free laundry was a great perk.

The accommodation is just a few minutes’ walk from Takayama Station. It’s a very spacious, clean apartment with all the amenities needed for a pleasant stay. Although we didn’t see the staff in person, as we had to pick up the keys at a hotel across from the apartment, they were always very kind and responsive through messages, and attentive to any needs that came up. They also provide complimentary drinks and snacks. Considering the price, the apartment is fully equipped and perfect for a comfortable stay in Takayama.

The hotel is located far away from stores and supermarkt but it was worth it. When we arrived we receivied a guide with restaurants options, also they had snow tools for cleaning the car. The shower at the room was very nive and clean.

We really enjoyed our stay here! We were graciously upgraded upon our arrival. We were hosted by Issekei-san (apologies if it was not the right spelling!). Parking needs to be reserved in advance. We suggest guests to reach out to the hotel ahead of time. It is 1000 yen per day at a parking spot near the hotel (1-2 mins walk). Issekei-san and his team demonstrated kindness and hospitality to me and my family by carrying our luggages from across the street (where I temporarily parked to get parking directions), and ensured that we were comfortable. He even made accommodations for us when other guests used up all the dryers such that we were able to complete our laundry by the end of our trip! The rooms and the onsens were also marvelous! The Machiya is truly worthy of its high rating. I'd visit Takayama again just for this hotel ^_^

This place is amazing, the staff is amazing, the experiences are amazing. The morning prayers are very suggestive and the breakfast cooking fun, they explain to you everything and they do it with nice smile and passion. Thank you to Mihoko, the monk and the host that helped me with the breakfast making Ryou (I don’t know if I spell it right) and the host from Hokkaido ( unfortunately I don’t know his name). It has been a real pleasure!

We love this town and have visited it before.

We love this town and have visited it before. It’s charming but not twee; historic but not precious. There is so much to see and do in town, not to mention in the surrounding area. We never seem to have enough time to see and do everything that we planned. We will return!

Takayama is a beautiful small city, very walkable with a chill retro vibe. It’s a great base for day trips to kamikochi, shin hotaka ropeway and shirakawa-go! We underestimated how much time we needed for the day trips and exploring Takayama city properly. We stayed for two days and wished we could’ve had three or four instead.

Hida Takayama is a charming city.

Hida Takayama is a charming city. With lots of historic and cultural sightseeing spots, delicious local cuisine and tasty Japanese small sweets, it offers visitors so many fantastic choices to relax. In the day time, visitors can start their day with a special breakfast at the morning market. Then take a tour bus and let it show you around to take a look at the small city or just take a walk along the well-preserved ancient streets. No matter what season it is, this small place always attracts a great number of travelers to visit it every year.

The town is small, without any striking landmarks, but many old houses have been preserved. The town's residents have long been engaged in carpentry. There are good porcelain shops. The surrounding area is full of fascinating sights, including the village of Shirakawago and the mountains with their hot springs. I recommend eating in Suzuya - It's popular, so you need to arrive a few minutes before they open. I recommend drinking morning coffee in Sanu coffee stand. There is truly good European coffee here

We chose Takayama as a stopover on the way to Hirayu Onsen, so it was a very brief stay. I would love to stay longer as while we were on a short walk around I saw a lot of wood carving workshops, which I'd love to explore

It is a lovely location.

It is a lovely location. It has a looped walk that shows multiple shrines and the old castle, watch out for the bears. There is an old street with wooden houses, it is a bit of a tourist trap and the shops are over priced but it is worth seeing. The museum is interesting and we met a lovely old man that guided us around. The street market was interesting.

The hotel feels ever so slightly on the older side, but in my opinion that works in its favour, as it adds to its charm. Everything was styled as a proper ryokan, the whole hotel has tatami floor. The top level open air Onsen is just fantastic, looking over the city (it was snowing very heavy while I was there, which made it even better). The breakfast buffet is also like a Japanese Kaiseki breakfast, amazing! Staff were also very friendly and polite like most places in Japan.

The service was excellent! From the front desk staff to the hotel staff (especially the girl who set up our dinner, she had glasses and a ponytail), everyone was so kind and helpful, you could feel all the love they put in the guests service! Also the dinner/breakfast was absolutely delicious! One of the best we had in Japan so far! And the onsen too! So happy we could experience them in the beautiful ryokan! We'll be back for sure! Thank you❤️

Staying at Ryokan Oyado Yamakyu is a true Japanese Experience. The place is beautiful and the rooms are spacious and confortable. The Onsen is very well equipped with everything you may need and the atmosphere is very relaxing. The food was very abundant and delicious. All the staff members are available, friendly and always smiling. A Great place where to live the Japanese culture while staying in Takayama

We absolutely enjoyed the entire ryokan experience. The Japanese dinner and breakfast were delicious. They provided us with yukata to wear during our stay. Our room was amazing, offering a stunning view of the river and Takayama Old Town. We also loved the onsen, and they have local beauty products available to use in the onsen. Additionally, the free shuttle bus was very convenient.

The kind, helpful, welcoming staff and onsen. Fact it was authentically Japanese. Good Japanese restaurant 5 mins walk up the road. Apparently this ryokan 5 mins walk from award winning French patisserie. Wish that info put in hotel's information booklet in room.
