We loved the elegance and grace of this older-style hotel, located on a large estate with beautifully manicured gardens high up in the mountains. Our room with balcony was spacious and modern, the bathroom was high-end with bidet, marble counters and floors. The bed was the most comfortable of all the accommodation we had experienced in Madeira. There was a wonderful indoor pool and sauna which contributed to our enjoyment. The breakfast was superb, with many interesting options and copious quantities. We loved our stay here, it was a wonderfully tranquil retreat.

Probably the comfiest hotel bed we've ever slept in - the quality of the sheets, matress and pillows was incredible. we got a free upgrade to a suite, the room was enormous and beautiful, with a freestanding bathtub. Breakfast was delicious, the hotel design was very fun. Beautiful rooftop pool and bar. Staff very friendly and accomodating. Would love to go back!

The location is just stunning. The Maisonette Suites have everything you look for. Shower & toilet on both floors, 2 nice terraces. The infinity pool has always lots of free sunbeds & is so beautiful. The staff is very helpful and natural. They have fun working and it leads to great interactions. The Avista Restaurant is just spectacular. The food (breakfasts & dinners) mindblowing. The views on the Atlantic above the cliff - no words. We will be back! 100%. Thank you for a great week.

We loved everything about this hotel! From the arrival where we were greeted with champagne to the wonderful food and bars offered within the hotel to the OUTSTANDING spa staff, we could not have had a better trip. We visited during a 3 day storm so we had plenty of time to use all of the hotel amenities and could not recommend them more. The rooms were spacious, had balconies (for those rare, clear moments) and had modern, clean bathrooms with luxurious showers. While I did not eat at the restaurant for dinner, 6 of our other friends did and absolutely raved about the food. The quality and value, coupled with excellent staff made for an amazing trip. Only a 5-minute walk from so many things to do in Old town and a 10-minute cab ride to the more commercialized, shopping area of town. We would only stay at the Castanheiro hotel again if we return.

From the moment we booked, we knew we were in for something special, but we never imagined it would be this extraordinary. Even before we arrived, the hospitality had already begun. The hotel manager personally reached out to check on our arrival time, ask if we needed help planning activities, and ensure everything was perfect for our stay. That level of thoughtfulness already set the tone. Then, our flight got canceled, and we arrived much later than expected—past midnight. But despite the late hour, the staff welcomed us warmly, gave us a quick and seamless check-in, and personally escorted us to our room. And that’s when the magic truly began. Luxury Beyond Expectations Waiting for us in our room was a bottle of champagne and a handwritten personal note—a gesture that already made us feel incredibly special. But then, as if that wasn’t enough, bouquets of fresh flowers kept arriving, filling the room with beauty and fragrance. We were stunned. And just when we thought we had seen it all, we discovered a special anniversary cake waiting for us. We almost felt guilty for having eaten before arriving! Honestly, if you’re ever considering staying anywhere else—don’t. This hotel is in a league of its own. Every single detail is handled with grace, warmth, and absolute perfection. A Breakfast to Remember The next morning, we woke up to one of the most incredible breakfasts we’ve ever had. Fresh exotic fruits, a luxurious spread of food, impeccable service—it felt like stepping into an old-world European dream, straight out of a classic film. Every moment at breakfast felt elegant and indulgent, like something out of a different era where hospitality was an art form.

Really hilly.

Really hilly. Though it is a good start for many walks on levadas. Restaurant Viola is the best restaurant in Madeira if you like beef on a steak (espatadas). Also old town of Camara de Lobos is a beautiful place during the night to eat and have a cocktail. Probably the best old town on the island. :)

It is away from the hustle and bustle of Funchal, yet only...

It is away from the hustle and bustle of Funchal, yet only 20 minutes away by car. It is well located for exploring the surrounding countryside and the charming seaside town of Camara de Lobos. Is is a quiet town but there are some local bars and cafes where you can get a flavour of local life plus sample local drinks and food. Whilst it is possible to get around by bus, a car is a better option as it is much more convenient, but only for those comfortable driving on narrow mountain roads.
