Food, Fado and Fun in Lisbon

Facing the Tagus River and built on seven hills, charming Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world. It offers unique tram rides, intimate Fado performances, great dining venues and much more.

The city is famous for its districts: the Belém's famous monuments; the Alfama's labyrinthine streets, bars and small shops; and the trendy Alcântara's docks. Lisbon’s most popular nightlife and shopping venues are located in Bairro Alto, while the traditional heart of the city beats rhythmically in the Baixa.

Enjoy a walk in the greenery of Jardim Botânico, admire the architecture of the Jerónimos Monastery or explore Feira da Ladra flea market. The Chiado area serves the city's best traditional Portuguese food. No meal is complete without some famous pastéis de nata!

Getting to the city centre is only a metro or bus ride from Lisbon Portela Airport. Whether you want a luxury hotel, a friendly guesthouse or a cosy apartment, Booking.com has plenty of accommodations for your holiday in Lisbon.

Beware, Lisbon can be dangerous, and we discovered that when someone unannounced and UNKNOWN to the AirBnB owners for the unit we stayed in, knocked on our door around 9 pm on the first night of our stay, and tried to get us to open the door, claiming they knew the owners even though they would not provide their own name to us. The door had no peephole, and the apartment building DID have cameras as well as a master front door which was code locked. In spite of the cameras, our AirBnB "owners" will NOT provide us with the video of the person who knocked on our door. Subsequent googling about crime and Lisbon revealed that it is not such a safe place, with a lot of targeted crime against tourists, complacent police, and corrupt politicians. If you go, go with MANY people so that you have safety in numbers, and avoid AirBnB, as the company simply does not care about customer safety.

This was my first time to Lisbon and I am now in love with the city. Indescribably beautiful with a chill, laid back people with enough cultural attractions, amazing restaurants, cafes, bakeries, and shopping, you could spend 2 weeks here or more and not run out of things to do. Don't buy a Yellow Bus ticket or any other private tour tickets unless you like that sort of thing. If you're independent and like to set your own pace, buy the Lisboa Card covering access to the best museums and discounting others while giving unlimited trips on public transit.

In October, the weather was surprisingly warm which was an additional bonus. I was in short sleeves and shorts for 3 weeks. The food is fresh and excellent.. it’s nice to visit some local Portuguese restaurants. Just ask your concierge or research the local area. I love Lisbon! Best places to visit Belem, Cascais for some beach and sunshine, Cristo Rei, Costa de Caprica, Sintra, Alfama, Castelo, St Anthony’s Church, Lisbon Cathedral, St Grace church (the views are amazing), St Jerome’s church, Marques de Pombal, Mercado de Ribeiro, Timeout, various gardens and Sao Sebastiao church near El Cortes Englais shopping centre. If you get a chance, take a day trip to Our Lady of Fatima Sanctuary.

We enjoyed visiting Lisbon, even though the weather wasn’t very nice during our stay. Many people say that eating out in Lisbon is cheap, but we found the prices not much different from London. The local people are very friendly and have a relaxed attitude, which we really liked. However, we did notice that pickpocketing seems to be quite common, so it’s good to stay alert. The city itself is beautiful, with stunning views everywhere, and I would definitely love to come back in the summertime!

Lisbon is a fascinating city, some areas are quite run down, others pristine, it's a thriving, bustling city yet has a gentle pace to it. Would visit again as only just scraped the surface during our 3 night stay. Cervaja Canil is definitely worth a visit

If you like being a tourist and gouged like a tourist, Lisbon is great. The airport, however, is awful.. If you visit Portugal, as I have many times, and want to actually experience it, the people and the food, leave Lisbon as soon as you can!

The best boutique hotel we have stayed in so far in Lisbon. Just perfect at a good price. This is the second of the Lisbon Heritage Collection hotels we have stayed in - the other, Janelas Verdes Inn, was almost as good. The location is perfect, great room, beautiful, understated décor, outstanding breakfast and wonderful staff. Fair parking price. Also decent food in the bar. I've run out of superlatives. We have tried maybe a dozen different hotels in Lisbon and this now goes to the top of our list.

Good location exceptionally helpful kind staff. Breakfast generous hotel good value for money. Rooms soundproof and shower powerful unlike many hotels. Best value for money I've stayed in with the best service. Getting to the airport transfer service cheaper than alternatives and more reliable than alternative taxi options, within 5 mjns the taxi came. Rooms very comfortable. I'd definitely recommend.
