I cant get enough words to express my happiness about the room and the amazing house owners. They were so lovely and always ready to help with anything. We felt at home and they were like familly. The little house made from stones is located in a small, beautiful village. The house is very beautiful, unique and cosy, in the kitchen you'll find all the essentials and a fireplace, the bed is very comfortble. Our host Eloisa was amazing, she went above and beyond to make us feel at home even though we stayed there for only one night. Breakfast was fantastic, it had everything one could need and I especially appreciated her attention to my request for gluten free products. Great experience, would recommend to everyone!

This is the second time I've been to Casa Pires Mateus and to be honest it is still as good as when I was there the first time. Lovely place, perfectly located and with amazingly comfortable rooms. The staff is kind and helpful, and the breakfast is plentiful and well prepared. It always brings me back some good memories and it has a special feeling you can't get in modern hotels, while still having all the modern comforts. There's a small kitchen you can use for small meals, which might come in handy given that there aren't a lot of restaurants around.

It was an amazing place steeped in history! The walk to the castle is a must as there are beautiful views at every turn. You will find yourself awestruck trying to fathom how it was possible to create a town amongst the boulders. It’s truly an amazing and magical place.

An amazing town with great views. Climbed up to the castle. All the houses built around the boulders were so interesting. Parking is very challenging here. Not great if you have mobility challenges.

Monsanto is a wonderful and unique town perched high amongst enormous boulders with Castle ruins and stunning views across Portugal. There are is an easy walk to the Castle and great coffee/wine shops and an excellent restaurant Monsanto Cafe and Bistro to enjoy.

Monsanto was a bit other worldly in some ways.

Monsanto was a bit other worldly in some ways. There was an old castle with an archangel Michael chapel - the House of the Dragon, a TV series, was filmed there. Many of the buildings had a huge boulder as one side of the structure or maybe a roof. We loved the hiking around there as well. And the views were spectacular. You could just feel the history around you.

Monsanto has been the highlight of our trip to Portugal and...

Monsanto has been the highlight of our trip to Portugal and Spain so far. It is so authentic and real, the buildings are amazing and the views are outstanding. The walk up to the Castle is a little challenging but so worth the effort. We were there for the medieval festival and were made very welcome by the locals and we had some memorable times there. If you are in the Douro Valley, make the effort to head to Monsanto if you want to visit an authentic and historic village.

Monsanto is the most unique small town we visited on our 3wk...

Monsanto is the most unique small town we visited on our 3wk trip to Portugal. You can start to see the massive boulders from the base of the hillside and then it's 5 km straight up winding narrow road. You will need your host to show you where to park.
