The hotel is exactly as shown in the pictures, superbly located on the Old Street and just 1 minute walk from the bus stop (via a steep road). All the top walking trails are closeby, and even the fireflies area can be reached in less than 10 minutes late in the evening. The front desk staff all speak English and are cheerful and helpful. This hotel is famous for its bento box and dining area, and day-trippers flock here to eat lunch and take pictures. The room itself was large, warm and comfortable in the middle of winter, with a nice view over the rooftops even from my ground floor room (see my picture). It had a dehumidifier and I did not feel/smell any of the dampness that is common in this area. The bathroom was a little dated, but in full working condition and spotlessly clean. Plenty of hot water and good shower pressure and drainage. The floor dried up pretty quickly, due to the dehumidifier. I don't think there is a better place to stay in Fenchihu and I would love to come back and visit.

This was by far the best stay we had in Taiwan. The view is magnificent and the surrounding tea farms and mountains are nice to explore. The terrace and the common spaces are great to slow down and enjoy the view. What makes this stay truly special is the kindness of the staff. They help with everything, driving us to dinner places and picking us up from the bus stop. You can really see that they care about the place and keep everything beautiful. You can also go to Alishan as a day trip so no need to stay within the national park.

Staying here is a very excellent decision if you want to be well located to visit Alisan Park, the tea fields, Fen Chi Hu village, and all the surroundings. We traveled by bus from Chiayi and got off at the bus stop (which is only a 15-minute walk from the accommodation. You can also coordinate with the family so that they can wait for you to take you home). It is important to note that the accommodation is in the tea field that the family has worked for generations, so it is very good if you want to learn how to make "Oolong tea". In fact, upon arrival, Sian-HuaDeng (the owner's daughter, who studied "nutrition" and who also speaks English very well) greeted us with "Oolong Tea" and pointed out the differences with other types of tea (which we also tried ), so we learned a lot and we felt really comfortable and happy with his company. From the place, there are also several trails to take beautiful pictures and also, it has views of the mountain that are beautiful since they have a viewpoint next to it where you can see the "sea of ​​clouds". For us it was an excellent experience, and we hope to return to reunite with Sian-HuaDeng and her family in this beautiful place in Taiwan that kept a little piece of our hearts.

The place is just where you go when you cannot find a place...

The place is just where you go when you cannot find a place in Alishan. There are some nice trails in bamboo forests etc but nothing so special. Also, the village literally shuts down after 7pm, we were left two nights without dinner (luckily 7-11 is always available, but watch out, only until 10pm here).

This is a rustic location on the side of a mountain, so...

This is a rustic location on the side of a mountain, so watch your footing & be prepared for a lack of services. Weekends are very crowded, whereas weekdays are relaxing, but many venues close. The hiking trails are well developed & maintained making this a prime attraction.

A recommendation for Fenqihu area is to look into visiting...

A recommendation for Fenqihu area is to look into visiting Da En Na Ya tribal area (Google it). This is a mountain tribe accessible by car on specialty tour visits, or by train from Fenqihu and another 4km of hike. But the tribal area is worth a visit as the tribe runs accommodation, restaurants, a bakery and is self-sufficient. It carries a high level of dignity and pride in interacting with the outside world, and is truly the highlight of my trip to Taiwan.

The front desk staff was super helpful.

The front desk staff was super helpful. The breakfast was delicious and had many offerings. The room was spacious, had nice touches such as heated bathroom floors and bed, and each room had special touches that were unique (e.g. our room had glow in the dark stars on the ceiling). The location and views were amazing from our balcony and the property is very close to wonderful attractions, such as HeHuan Mountain. The only challenge we had was finding the property, which is located in a narrow road behind a market parking lot.
