El Retiro del Obispo is a special Casa Rural or Country Home nestled in the medieval stone wall surrounding Laguardia, This historically protected space has been lovingly restored and furnished. The two meters deep stone walls in its master suites were constructed in the 12th century by order of the king of Navarra, Sancho VI as part of Laguardia’s defensive fortification that encircles the village. The property was historically under the ownership of the Catholic Church and served as the residence of the region’s bishop. More recently it was the home of one of Spain’s beloved media personalities. After a two year restoration, El Retiro del Obispo is now welcoming guests who wish to enjoy one of the most distinctive and iconic lodgings in all of the Rioja Álavesa. The 3rd and 4th floor suites allow pets with well behaved owners 🐾🐾

With its spacious elegant captivating bedroom lounge, private kitchen and available second bedroom, this floor is perfect for families or close friends to enjoy the comforts of home. The regal master suite beckons with an antique queen bed of mahogany and a soaring, carved headboard flanked by two heavy wrought iron sconces. Opposite is a stately carved antique desk and chair. Mahogany French doors are adorned by rich fabrics and a wrought iron center sconce. Step through them onto the individual balconies to take in the village and miles of scenic countryside below. Rumor has it that this is where the Bishop would quietly keep vigil over his subjects, with eyes that could look in opposite directions! The kitchen offers a full sized cooktop, dishwasher, undercounter refrigerator-freezer, microwave, toaster and a deep sink all set against hand decorated tiles. Ample cabinets are stocked with essentials, cookware, dishes and utensils.The suite is completed with a stone tiled bath featuring a large open shower, stone sink and vintage commode.
