My husband, Oli, and I are former teachers whose work took us from Abu Dhabi to Melbourne, and along the way we developed a real love for travel and welcoming people from all over the world. We now run our very small property business while tutoring online, which gives us the freedom to keep exploring – and to share the joy of a comfortable, memorable stay with our guests. We’ve truly fallen in love with Woodbridge, recently voted the happiest town in the UK. Tucked just off the historic Thoroughfare, Deben Cottage is a Grade II listed hideaway full of charm. Set within the town’s conservation area, this dog-friendly cottage offers a peaceful base whether you’re returning from a riverside walk or settling in for a quiet evening. Inside, you’ll find soft throws, a smart TV with Netflix for cosy nights in, and a desk for remote work. Step outside to your private garden, complete with fairy lights – perfect for a morning coffee, a sunset drink, or a quiet moment under the stars. Please note: The bedroom and bathroom are accessed via a steep, narrow staircase typical of listed cottages of this age. It adds to the character but may not suit guests with limited mobility. This is not a modern build, and that’s part of its appeal. With slightly sloping floors, thoughtful touches, and plenty of personality, Deben Cottage offers the comfort of a peaceful retreat with the charm of a traditional English home.

Woodbridge is one of the happiest towns in the UK – and once you arrive, it’s easy to see why. A short 5-minute walk from the cottage brings you to the River Deben and the historic Tide Mill, one of only two working tide mills in the country. You can even buy flour milled on site. The town is full of charming streets lined with independent shops, cafés, and traditional pubs.
