The cottage was tastefully decorated, retaining original features but modern aswell. It felt really cosy and was so inviting with the pretty lights in the lounge after a wet visit to Chatsworth House! Communication and info about things to do in...

Jewel cottage was just perfect for us. We arrived in the dark to find the heating and lights on, a lovely welcome! The whole place was spotlessly clean and Jo was really helpful. Many thanks Jo

Lock Box on the front of the property so access was easy. Drive is definitely tight, you need to reverse up, we have a large SUV and managed ok. Cottage was lovely and cosy, sofa's could do with replacing though. Beds were comfy, a little soft...

The cottage was built in 1740 and combines quirky character with all modern comforts, so you'll find exposed beams and stonework, a wood burning stove and original fireplaces. Plus all the comfort of superking sized beds in both cosy bedrooms, and all the modern touches you need to enjoy your stay from wifi and central heating, to a fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher, and both a bath and a shower in the roomy bathroom. You'll feel right at home! (Please note this is a very old cottage on three floors with steep stairs and extra steps between rooms and isn't suitable for small children or people with mobility issues. Steep stairs lead up to the main bedroom and bathroom, and a second set of steep stone stairs lead down from the lounge to the second bedroom, which is at street level and below the garden level. Also, we are very lucky to be one of the few properties in the area with off street parking, but it is up a narrow drive, and drivers of larger cars might prefer to park next to the cottage on Smedley St East (where parking is restricted between 9am and 5pm weekdays, but unrestricted over night and at weekends) or on Henry Avenue which is unrestricted at all times.)
I've lived in the Peak District for over a decade, and have walked many of its beautiful hills and valleys with my dogs, yet still constantly find new places to explore and enjoy, and love to help point my guests in the right direction of fun things to see and do in the area. Having stayed in many holiday homes around the country, I aim to make the cottage somewhere I'd love to stay in myself...hopefully we haven't forgotten anything that can possibly be added to the cottage but we are always after ideas from our guests. I live 10 minutes away so am always available is there's a problem - please feel free to call me at any time.
The cottage is just a 10 minute walk from all the shops and restaurants in Matlock, and is set in the quiet area of Matlock Bank, a Victorian spa village. The cottage is the perfect base to explore Matlock and the Peak District, whether you want to visit the year round attractions of nearby Chatsworth House, the jewel of the Peak District, or the stunning Medieval Haddon Hall with it's romantic rose garden. Perhaps you want to roam around the many quaint local villages like Winster, and Birchover offering stunning country walks and cosy pubs. You could head to nearby Youlgreave and take a picnic along the river in summer, or cosy up fireside in a pub in winter. Or take a walk to Matlock Bath for fish and chips, or a cable car up to the Heights of Abraham. Catch the Peak Rail steam train, take a leisurely walk along the Monsal Trail, be stunned by the view at Monsal Head, or Baslow Edge, or Curbar Gap. Hire a bike at Middleton Top. Spot trout in the clear waters of Lathkill Dale, or walk up to the dizzy heights of Mam Tor. Or, if that all sounds too energetic, just walk down the hill into Matlock and enjoy a meal or drinks, with a choice of several highly rated restaurants and wine bars. Please note that the hill back up to the cottages is steep - you'll definitely know you're in the Peak District!
