Swan Hotel, hotel in Houghton

Situated in the heart of Arundel, this grade II listed Victorian building was completely refurbished in May 2012 to combine traditional comforts with the facilities of a modern 4-star hotel.

Checked in no problem, parking is at a car park less than 3 minutes walk from the Swan. Some stairs to walk up, a member of staff kindly helped me with my bag. Room had a double bed, room a little small but no problem. I didn't eat in the restaurant but I did look at the menu, it's a seasonal menu so changes with the seasons. Breakfast: excellent, a buffet for cereals and continental and a well served and tasty choice of English dishes. The bar has a good stock of British and foreign beers plus wine and spirits, service was very good. Arundel is a very quiet town after closing time, I always sleep with the window open and had a peaceful night with only council staff reversing nearby. I add this comment because I do not normally sleep well on the first night in a new location. Lots of bars and restaurants nearby, I wish I had time to visit them. I'll stay there again.

House Arundel is really central in the town but really quiet in the evening My room was beautifully decorated and the bed incredibly comfortable. We had dinner the first night at the local pub, The George...

We had dinner the first night at the local pub, The George and Dragon, which is 10 min's walk from the property. The meals were fairly priced and quality good. The pub is popular during the day with walkers and the menu is very traditional, with a nod to the 70's and 80's. Both host and staff are very welcoming. Saturday we went walking, which was a little waterlogged around the river following a few days of heavy rain. But the South Downs Way is very close which was much drier with well maintain paths and views across the Arun valley that are not to be missed. Saturday evening we ate at the Boathouse. A small family restaurant on the river in Houghton adjacent to the Bridge Pub. The service and quality of both the food and wines were exceptional, within a limited menu. Thoroughly recommended, although we were told the Bridge was very popular by the owner. However, unless you're visiting in the summer on a dry evening when you can walk along the river bank into the village, a car is required for the short journey down the hill due to there being no pedestrian walk way along the roadside.
