Bear Crickhowell, hotel in Pont Newydd

In Crickhowell, in the Brecon Beacons, The Bear dates back to 1432. Expect a welcoming atmosphere, old world charm and good food. Awarded Inn of the Year 2010 by the Good Pub Guide.

Fabulous location in the centre of Crickhowell. We used the hotel as an overnight base as we were visiting the Hay Literature Festival which is 30 minute drive away. Lovely, friendly greeting from the lady at reception who advised that we had been upgraded to a courtyard room. The room was spacious, clean and well decorated- very pleased.Good size bathroom well stocked with towels and a few toiletries. We booked a table for an evening meal ( good job we booked, the restaurant was very busy). Food was excellent and reasonably priced. Breakfast was also very good. Would definitely stay here again. Crickhowell is a lovely place to visit and an ideal base for exploring Bannau Brycheiniog.

Very small room with hardly any surface areas to put things on. Resorted to using the cistern top for toiletries. Shower screen not clean and blind is broken. No spoon for tea and coffees. Mattresses poor quality. We don’t normally bother writing a review if standards aren’t great. But I think we were unlucky with our room as other guests seem happier according to the reviews.

The road to this property is exceptionally narrow and unlit.

The road to this property is exceptionally narrow and unlit. Only the width of one (small) car. As the nearest towns (Crickhowell and Abergavenny) are a good 5 miles away be aware that if you eat out at night you will be driving back in scary conditions. Not for the nervous driver. The property itself is sublime and the views are incredible. If the weather is good then ask to take breakfast on the terrace to fully appreciate.

Magical beauty, have to be fit to walk in the hills, but there are plenty of more accessible walking opportunities. Good walking shoes are essential. Crickhowell is a charming town with lovely shops and restaurants. Taxi is affordable, can manage without driving. If you are lucky up in the mountains, there are wild horses: an unforgettable experience in contact with untouched nature!

Excellent host Paul. Modern clean facilities.

Excellent host Paul. Modern clean facilities. Fabulous views. Located on a sheep farm, surrounded by hedged laneways. Fifteenth Century church about a mile away. More time needed than the one night we had.
