I'm uncertain as to why this place has such high reviews. It's a dump. They don't even have a view that's decent! It's way out of the main strip of town, the second floor is made out of chipboard, majority of the Chalets have been rented out to the socially disadvantaged so there's kids running around everywhere, neighbours were loud and kept changing our tv channel, cobwebs everywhere and no privacy to even get unchanged.
Featuring amazing views of Mt Ruapehu, 2 hot tubs and a restaurant with a large deck area, Kings Ohakune is 2 minutes’ walk from Ohakune Station and 3 minutes' walk from the start of the Ohakune...

We stayed in Ohakune to ride the Old Coach Trail - a walking and cycling trail that runs between Ohakune & Horopito. It's a grade 3 trail and we rode it both ways but most people get a shuttle to Horopito and ride it one way. Lovely trail with thick bush, viaducts and views to Mount Ruapehu.
There are a reasonable number of restaurants/cafes in Ohakune, considering it's a small town. We had dinner at Osteria, which was OK. Utopia had nice coffee and pastries.

We re-visited the Chocolate Eclair shop after a number of years, now under new management, eclairs still amazing. Nice town with the accent on it's access to the snow fields. In the winter season the town would be buzzing but in April very quiet.
Our fish and chip dinner was very disappointing in spite of glowing internet reviews, wouldn't recommend. We should have asked a 'local'

Really enjoyed our dinner at Osteria - Italian, lovely atmosphere, attentive staff, delicious food, very popular. Enjoyed a 3 hr return walk into the Hapuawhenua Viaducts along the Old Coach track (need vehicle/shuttle to get to start) and great area for mountainbiking. Went for a drive up the mountain road with awesome views, and a stop at a nearby waterfall. Then a 1 hr native bush walk ( Mangawhero Forest walk) where friendly little fantails and robins flew about and you could hear the whoosh of wood pigeon high in the trees. Dinner at the PowderKeg - a pub setting with dining area. Again, lovely food and within walking distance of accommodation this time. Good supermarket in town and looked around shops (some vacant as is the case with many small rural towns now) and lovely playground/walkway at the Carrotland Adventure Park, then morning cuppa at the Chocolate eclair shop before departing town.

We went to Ohakune to walk the Tongariro Alpine crossing.
We went to Ohakune to walk the Tongariro Alpine crossing. it's a 35/40 min drive to the car park.
We didn't arrive until the afternoon, settled in then went out for dinner.
Hiked the next day and chilled the day after which we were very glad to rest as the hike for incredible but my body was a bit sore the next day!!
Left after checkout on the 3rd day.
The best place for dinner was the Cyprus tree (book as it getting really busy) it was one of the pricier places we ate but definitely worth it.
Osteria was nice too, cheaper, and had more of a pub feeling.
We went to the Mountain Rocks cafe for breakfast- it was cheap and cheerful. The coffee was very nice.
we had food off the menu but they had lots of cabinet food which looked nice too. Savoury and sweet treats.
Ohakune is a very small town, it suited us perfectly as we had activities to do. Lots of small walks and a waterfall too.

Very likely quieter in Summer than Winter.
Very likely quieter in Summer than Winter.
Lots of walks of easy access, some without a car. Lots of trail rides (MountainstoSea).
Enough shops + New World (small version of it!) and heaps of cafés and restaurants make Ohakune an easy town to venture from in Summer.
Large selection of accommodation, from backpackers to chalets to Powderhorn Chateau.
We loved this place. The staff were so welcoming and thoughtful - an excellent B&B experience. Rooms were comfortable and lodge area was very comfortable. A delicious, home cooked breakfast was included. Finally, they place has a number of animals on premise and our hosts were very kind to let us pet some of the animals including, sheep, alpacas and a few Maine Coon cats!
The location is perfect right in the middle of Ohakune. Really appreciated the common area including the kitchen, well maintained and spacious with everything we needed. Nice to have a sink in the room when sharing a bathroom. Easy parking out the back of the building. The heaters kept the room at a nice temperature and you can turn them on and off when you like.
- location, being right in the middle of both ends of town, we enjoyed walking end to end having our motel in the middle.
- staff were fun and humorous on our entry. Made for a great first impression
- the wooden layout of the motel
- was a quiet and peaceful area of Ohakune
Pure quality. We were expecting run of the mill motel lodge but it was upmarket and far exceeded expectations. Alan and Susie were exceptional hosts and really made us welcome. Nothing was too much. Booked us a table at a busy restaurant for a very nice meal.
We were stuck inside as the ski weather was atrocious and the mountain was closed for all three days. Ossies allowed an early check-in and there was ample space in the 1 bedroom chalet for us to chill-congregate or each do our own thing.
Perfectly located to walk into Ohakune. Spacious for 2 people. A well equipped kitchen. Lovely tiled bathroom with huge shower - seems to have been recently done up. Very clean throughout. Great to have parking right outside.
The room was a lovely size with a spacious sitting area. It was fantastic having a beautiful big deep bath to relax in. Comfortable bed.
Reception staff were very friendly and helpful
Called a backpackers but we had our own double room and bathroom. Right in the town and wonderful view of the mountains. Price was way lower than the competition.
the location was perfect, close to town but far enough away to not have light pollution. Fantastic for our family, great setup with everything we needed.
Such a great place to stay. It's a budget hotel but fantastic value for money. Rooms are basic but have everything you need and the staff are wonderful.
