The drive up to Casa de David in Monsanto's old town was kind of difficult. But once we arrived we could find a parking spot near the accommodation.
The room we stayed in was adequate for 3 adults.

Exceptional in every way!! Our hosts thought of every little comfort and detail and provided a delicious breakfast. The boulder village and our accommodations were incredibly unique. It was our second visit.

Monsanto has been the highlight of our trip to Portugal and Spain so far.
It is so authentic and real, the buildings are amazing and the views are outstanding.
The walk up to the Castle is a little challenging but so worth the effort.
We were there for the medieval festival and were made very welcome by the locals and we had some memorable times there.
If you are in the Douro Valley, make the effort to head to Monsanto if you want to visit an authentic and historic village.

Monsanto is the most unique small town we visited on our 3wk trip to Portugal. You can start to see the massive boulders from the base of the hillside and then it's 5 km straight up winding narrow road. You will need your host to show you where to park.

It is a good idea to book a place for the night.
It is a good idea to book a place for the night. The views are so incredible and unique you will want to experience day and night in amongst the boulders. There is a wonderful hike to the ruins above the boulder village. There is spectacular lighting in the evening. The village is quite out of the way for travelling. This was our second visit to Monsanto so we knew to book for the night. Lots of unique places to eat. We ate at our hosts' spot and it was great. Once you arrive amongst the boulders, you don't have to leave until your stay is over. You can find all you need there.

Very unique. Great trekking up to the fort (short but steep). We really enjoyed the “rock village”. Our meal at Pestitos and Granitos was delicious. We recommend Monsanto fro those looking for a unique experience.

It's a very peaceful place with lots of great views and we found a lovely bistro to eat at. Some of the roads are very steep and you have to park and walk so for someone not so good on their feet this wouldn't be suitable

Breakfast was very, very good.
Breakfast was very, very good. Plentiful and the 1 st place that had scrambled eggs. The setting , room with very nice, and w/ stated excellence and environment. Elegantly decorated. Plenty of cold cuts and cheese. In any event, a morning feast for the eyes and stomach.
The Old House and its host Eloíza was perfect. Monsanto is a crazy place and we have no idea how it was ever inhabited. There are house sized boulders everywhere including the inside of this house. You have to park 100 meters or so from the house. But Eloíza will pick you and your luggage up and than transport you in her little electric car that can barely squeeze through the narrow streets. This service is near invaluable as we witnessed other visitors trying to carry their bags up the steep narrow streets and walkways.
This was a really lovely experience!! Joao (host)was just terrific - so pleasant and helpful! The studio is perfect and nicely outfitted - they provided breakfast makings and brought fresh bread in the am. I think it is fair value for money - I would say you are paying in part for the experience of living in this room in a boulder space which is well worth it!! It really did make Monsanto even more memorabIe! I would do it again and highly recommend it! Thanks for the memories!!
What an amazing place Monsanto! The rooms were built in and around boulders and was charmingly furnished. The breakfast was amazing and so inexpensive. And I cannot say enough kind things about our Host Estela. Kind --and genuinely delights in getting to know you. I felt like I was staying with a friend I hadn't seen in many years. She is as delightful as the accommodation. And her store is filled with amazing art and well-curated pieces for sale.
We loved staying in the stairway to the castle in the unique village of Monsanto. We enjoyed being able to quietly explore the narrow streets and the castle next to us. the town at night is magical . The house is beautifully decorated and clean and comfortable. The host Simon was very responsive and you felt welcome and supported if needed. Would definitely recommend we discovered there is more to this area than expected.
WOW! What an excellent property, with a spectacular view, in a remarkable village, an excellent breakfast, and, and a wonderful host. We drove here and parking was safe, free, and readily available. We will definitely return and recommend staying here to our friends and family. Perfect experience. Staying at Casa do Castello, in Monsanto, is something you shouldn't miss.
This was such a cool quirky place to stay. Had a great view from the balcony. Great to have a washing machine. Contact with the host was good. Stayed here with our daughter - bedrooms were small so had our suitcases in the 'lounge'.
Monsanto is definitely worth the visit, one night is enough to see it all but if you have time and want to chill out take an extra night.
The location was smack in the middle of town so we were already close to all the cool things about Monsanto (the narrow streets with boulders, castle, etc). The apartment was so cozy, the rooftop terrace was so neat, our room going up the spiral staircase was very nice. Could accommodate four people due to the bedroom in the basement that my wife and I did not use.
We loved the peace, the tranquility, the gardens, the setting. Our hosts, Ingrid and her partner, were very hospitable and helpful with suggestions about where to go. The breakfast in the garden was delightful. Monsanto was a 20 minute scenic walk up a hill. Visiting Monsanto was a highlight of our trip. 😃
We are very grateful to the owner Elena for her exceptional hospitality. The house is located in the historical mountain village Monsanto and beautifully renovated. Elena helped us with delivering our baggage from the parking lot and brougt us welcoming traditional delicious soup. Thank you, Elena!
We were super excited to stay at this hotel. The welcoming person is very nice, she speaks English, Spanish and of course Portuguese. The breakfast was really cool. In general it was a great experience of visiting Monsanto especially because of our stay in Casa Pires Mateus
This was perfection for me. Loved the room, the setting, the Roman road just off the back gate to walk to Monsanto. I loved Ingrid’s hospitality & wonderful breakfast. And then there was the in room massage with Morgana. Exploring Monsanto from here was magical.
We were looking forward to staying in this unique stone house and everything was perfect, it really could not of been better. Beautiful views and sunsets. Monsanto is truly amazing.
Eloiza is an incredible host, she will take incredible care of you.
Our third location in Portugal and so far the best. We like to sleep under covers in a cool room and room temp was easy to control. Comfortable bed. Strong water pressure and instantly hot in shower. No complaints.
Fantastic location, it’s like you one of the Templar Knights looking out onto far off hills. The House is well appointed with really nice and tasteful touches everywhere. Close to all there is to explore in Monsanto
Comfy bed, cozy room, clean and nice bathroom, breakfast and service is excellent, staffs are professionals. I'm sure I choose this hotel again when I go back to Castelo Branco.
