The area had a place to shop and food outlets and was within easy walking distance of Porto's main centre. One huge advantage is that, being at a higher level, when you walk across the bridge (or catch the metro across) to the North side of the river, you are almost at the top of Porto, which saves a long climb.
There are also interesting sights and sites in Vila Nova de Gaia itself, such as the monastery and the views over the Douro to Porto. The monastery was shut when we went but may be open later. Mostly we went further afield so I cannot comment on much that was there. The Jardim de Morro is worth a visit, especially if you like live music performers and good views.

VNDG gives the most amazing views of Porto.
VNDG gives the most amazing views of Porto. A short walk across the bridge to the city. Its flat where I stayed but the city is very steep with lots of steps so wear sneakers. The tiled churches as stunning. Doing all the touristy things - I caught the cable car, the tram, the furnicular, shopped the markets, visited the churches, climbed the tower, booked for the Livraria Lella, had a glass of wine at the market, went to wine bars, Time Out market for dinner and Portuguese tarts with coffee.
I had a fabulous time and visited World of Wine as Porto is a Great Wine Capital.

Beautiful part of Porto, right over the river with plenty to do. Most of the Porto wine "caves" are on this side of the river but getting across is a quick uber ride. We did a Tuk Tuk tour as well and got to enjoy a Fado performance at night. New Years Eve dinner cruise was great but book ahead so you don't miss out! I would definitely visit again!

The area has plenty of interesting things to visit.
The area has plenty of interesting things to visit. Of course, the region is very well known for the vineyards and the respective Port wine cellars, which you can visit and even have a wine tasting. A walk by the river is also recommended.

The location right on the Douro River was exceptional. We had a wonderful view of the river and of Porto from our room and balcony. Our studio had a lovely bathroom, kitchen and sitting area as well. The breakfast buffet was the best we encountered in our one month stay in Portugal. What a great variety of food, and you could order other items to be cooked for you, too. We also ate dinner at the rooftop bar and in the restaurant and had excellent food both places. Every person we encountered on the staff was so friendly and helpful.
The staff was extremly friendly and welcome upon my arrival at the hotel. I have selected a specified check-in, however, I arrived earlier in Porto since my Alfa Pendular met the scheduled arrival time. Even tho, they checked me in an hour before my requested time and didn't charge any extra.
The hotel location (Coimbrões) can offer a vast number of buses and trains to Porto-Campanhã or Gaia. You can do a 20 minutes walk to Gaia-Devesas station, which isn't that far from the hotel.
A truly exceptional 5 star stay. Everything from the breakfast, to the upgraded suite with a warm welcome and a happy birthday note, the spa, the happy hour reception, and the bar- I truly enjoyed my stay. As a travel influencer and travel agent who visited for my birthday. I will certainly stay here again and make sure my clients book this hotel for their future travels to Porto, Portugal. I literally have no complaints and can't wait until I can return!
The apartment was comfortable, and having a balcony at both ends meant we could always have a wonderful view and a breeze!
The kitchen was well supplied.
The Homeit phone app worked well, and it was nice to have a key for backup.
The location of the apartment was so convenient- subway and trains, bakeries and restaurants all within a block.
We liked having very quick access to downtown Porto, while being away from the busiest streets.
We had an outstanding stay. The staff was highly service minded at check-in and check-out (Fransesca), amazing view of Porto from our hotel/room and a free upgrade was a very pleasant surprise. The breakfast at the terrace was an excellent start of the day. Yeatman's proximity to the WoW (World of Wine) museum was brilliant and the museum was very interesting in a modern educational setting. We will come back and stay at the Yeatman again.
Golden Tulip Porto Gaia Hotel Is one of the best hotels i was in my travelling. The crew, Juliana and Anderson were very helpful and kind. Juliana took care to all my request and was kind in helping anything, therefore i thank her a lot for making my stay much more pleasant. The room was amazing, everything was more than perfect, the furniture the view is outstanding. Definitely a wise decision i made in life to go and take this hotel.
The staff are incredible, helpful and kind. The property is beautiful, clean and the service is impeccable. You are in Gaia not Porto but overlook Porto and the river and 10 min walk over the bridge to Porto. The hotel is very unique because you check in on the 14th floor and go down to your rooms. Absolutely lovely place to stay, we really, really enjoyed it and would definitely book here again on our next visit to Porto!

Breakfast was brilliant - the breakfast experience at Novotel Porto Gaia exceeded my expectations in every way. The staff's professionalism, friendliness, and willingness to assist made me feel truly valued as a guest. The wide selection of fresh produce ensured a delightful culinary experience, and the flexible opening hours catered to my needs.
Location location location is the best. Close to metro, bus or train. Short walk to main attractions such Porto caves, restaurants, bars and the bridge to the city centre.
You can find the kettle and cups in the shared area which I liked as not many hotels in Portugal have them.
Highly recommended for short stay. 😊
Very cute and clean apartment in a quiet and easy location to explore Vila Nova de Gaia and Porto! AC in every room ensured for maximum comfort. Easy check in/check out process. Tons of things to eat and do moments outside our door. Paolo was responsive and helpful before and during our stay.
The location in Gaia is fantastic for a visit to Porto as well as the Gaia port wine side. A short walk gets you everywhere quickly yet the hotel itself is quiet and like a sanctuary. The room was wonderful and since we were on the fourth floor we had a view. The breakfast was excellent.
To be honest, we liked everything about The Lodge Hotel - great location, friendly and really helpful staff, fantastic room with great views over the river and old Porto, wonderful breakfast - I could go on
The location is priceless as the view from the Living room is stunning. We met people who stayed in good hotels in Porto who lost for words when they sav.oured the view we had
I loved the location, the restaurants were close the city was a 20 minutes walk to Vila Nova de Gaia the second town to Porto city. All the little shops close to the apartment.
Great location, just a couple streets away from one of the most picturesque parts of porto. Hotel has been recently developed and all fittings have been done to a high level.
Beautiful hotel, the detail and service was exceptional.
Great location to explore all the best Porto has to offer
Breakfast was incredible and rooms extremely comfortable.
Staff was very accommodating, location was great for port cellars, tastings, and restaurants in Vila Nova de Gaia. very close to bridge for short walk to Porto.
