Faro is the picturesque capital of the Algarve region, offering colourful streets and buildings, Moorish influence, and typical Portuguese charm. It is encompassed by the lagoon of Ria Formosa Natural Park, and offers wide beaches, a laid-back atmosphere, and a vibrant nightlife.
Occupied by Phoenicians and Carthaginians, and once an important Roman harbour and Moorish culture capital, it was almost flattened by the 1755 earthquake. The long, sandy beach of Praia de Faro is 7 km from the city, and the beach on Barreta Island –also known as Deserta - is probably the most tranquil in the region. Friendly people. Lots of great restaurants and great food reasonably priced. Not much to see in the city. Small streets and lot of cars with no place to park. Faro is a city of contrasts, old and new, pretty streets, graffiti in places, derelict buildings amongst the habitable ones. Tourist spots like the marina area, shopping streets, old city were great and the food and drink venues plentiful, good quality and fair pricing. Markets, street entertainment and craft fairs were everywhere during our visit. Visits to historical buildings were only a few euros per person and children often free. There seemed to be ample car parking, much of it free, and public transport was plentiful. Many operators provided sightseeing boat trips and there are regular ferries to the beaches. Nowhere in Faro escapes the airport traffic but you soon get used to it. The public parks were well maintained.Mullings - 10Scored 10

EASY TO GET ROUND, PLENTY OF SHOPS AND RESTAURANTS, WITH VERY PLEASANT STAFF/WORKERS. ENJOYED THE WALK AROUND THE OLD TOWN. WORTH A WALK UP TO THE MUNICIPAL MARKET AS THE RANGE OF FRESH FISH AND VEG IS FACINATING. THE BIG SHOPPING CENTRE IS ALSO WORTH A VISIT, GREAT RANGE OF SHOPS AND PLACES TO EAT AND BEING PARTLY IN THE OPEN AIR, VERY PLEASANT ON A HOT DAYBORG - 10Scored 10

Lovely friendly accommodating people (all the locals). The graffiti is artwork in most cases, I was informed it's used to mark abandoned/derelict buildings. Can be a little disorientating in the old town, but it is beautiful. Traffic can be a little busy around rush hour, if you are not used to city driving and some of the roads can be a bit uneven around the old town, so I'd advise don't drive through Old Town in a sports car.

Praia de faro is nice of you looking for a quiet break it has few restaurants for a nice meal.and a few drinks. Beach is beautiful so if you want a slow pace holiday near the airport just to unwind its for you. If you prefer bars and shops there aren't any really.

We used the small pool area for a few hours, it is small but quiet and a lovely sun trap. The rooms are lovely, clean and stylish. They also went out of their way to make the room special for our stay. Although they don’t have catering breakfast was offered for delivery, but we opted to use a local cafe as the hotel is 5m from the town centre. Highly recommend the hotel for a night or few nights in Faro town.

THANK YOU FILIPE!! The room was cheerful and comfortable and the open balcony style courtyard made the place extra spacious. We also enjoyed sharing a kitchen and having fridge space available, which made our 10 day stay in Faro more economical. Also the Albergio Formosa is very central to the old city, the ferry, the train and bus station.TomasIreland

Its a short 10 minute drive to the airport and then you can take the ferry from the beach into the Faro downtown for 2.30 euros one way.
